Web design is a creative career that combines visual design, technology and an understanding of how people use websites. Companies, agencies and clients look for designers who can create sites that look good, work well on every device and are accessible to everyone. Here is what you need to learn, which education paths lead there and how to get your first job as a web designer.
Web designer, UX/UI designer or web developer?
The job titles overlap, but the focus differs:
- Web designers create the look, layout and feel of websites and often build them, for example with a content management system.
- UX/UI designers focus on user research, user flows, wireframes and interface design, usually in tools like Figma, and hand their designs to developers.
- Front-end developers turn designs into working code, while back-end developers build the server side and databases.
The core skills
HTML
HTML is the backbone of every web page. Even if you mainly design, you need to understand how pages are structured — it makes you a better designer and makes working with developers much easier. Semantic HTML (using the right elements for headings, navigation, buttons and forms) is also the basis of accessible websites.
CSS
CSS controls how pages look: colors, typography, spacing and layout. Modern CSS with Flexbox, Grid and media queries lets you build responsive designs that adapt to phones, tablets and large screens — essential now that most web traffic comes from mobile devices.
JavaScript basics
You don’t have to be a programmer, but basic JavaScript helps you add interactivity, understand what is technically possible and work with frameworks and website builders.
Design fundamentals
Great web design starts with classic design skills: color theory, typography, composition, visual hierarchy and consistent design systems. These matter more than any single tool.
UX and accessibility
Good designers think about the people using a site: Is the navigation clear? Can everyone read the text? Can the site be used with a keyboard or screen reader? Learn the basics of user experience and the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) — accessibility is increasingly a legal requirement, for example under the European Accessibility Act, which applies to many websites and online shops in the EU since June 2025.
Tools and platforms
- Design tools: Figma is the industry standard for interface design; Adobe tools such as Photoshop and Illustrator are useful for images and graphics.
- Content management systems: WordPress powers a large share of all websites; website builders such as Webflow, Wix or Squarespace are popular with small businesses.
- Basic SEO and performance: fast, well-structured pages rank better and convert more visitors.
- AI tools: AI can speed up prototyping, image editing and coding, but it doesn’t replace good design judgement.
Education: degree, course or self-taught?
There are several ways into web design:
- A degree in graphic design, communication design, media design or computer science gives you a broad foundation and is valued by some larger employers.
- Bootcamps and certificate courses teach practical skills intensively in a few months.
- Online courses and self-study — many excellent resources are free, such as MDN Web Docs or freeCodeCamp.
Whichever route you choose, most employers and clients care most about one thing: your portfolio. Build real projects — a personal site, websites for friends, local clubs or non-profits, or redesigns of existing sites — and explain your design decisions in short case studies.

Starting your career in web design
Typical first jobs include junior web designer, junior UX/UI designer, front-end developer or web content roles at agencies, in-house marketing teams or start-ups. Many web designers also work as freelancers. Don’t be discouraged if you start in a junior position — everyone starts somewhere. Keep learning, ask for feedback, follow design trends and keep your portfolio up to date.

I really want to become a web designer and I like HTML and CSS but is it necessary to learn javascript too? I don’t know why but I think HTML and CSS is very easy to learn but javascript is difficult!
